Idris Elba, Margot Robbie and Jay Courteney are set to star in super-villain team-up film The Suicide Squad. Both James Gunn and Suicide Squad are back with the supervillain team getting another movie — and the new trailer promises it will be violent, hilarious, and downright engaging. 

Following the mixed reception to the original 2016 film, this new DC Extended Universe entry will be a soft reboot, keeping some of the cast like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, but adding a number of exciting additions.

The trailer specifically focuses on Idris Elba's new character Bloodsport — in prison for keeping Superman in the ICU — but also highlights some, um, weird inclusions including Sean Gunn's Weasel, Sylvester Stallone's King Shark and Kaiju baddie Staro. Gone 

Gun's Guardians of the Galaxy stars a talking raccoon and a walking tree, though — and Rick Flagg actor Joel Kinnaman believes the director has done even better this time around.

"It's crazy. It's the best film ever James Gun" Kinnmn by  the Variety  reported  . "I thought it really transcended the genre, and it grew into something big. And then it's very silly, and in many ways ridiculous and overly violent."

He continued: "At the end of the movie, it's completely normal to see this huge shark gnawing on a person's head, and some people chatting next to it."

Director and writer James Gunn said earlier this year that with The Suicide Squad he "made every single choice and [Warner Brothers] never interfered in the slightest.

"He gave very few notes - they were usually nice and modest and I'd have them if I wanted to and not if I didn't. Warner was amazing creatively."

The finished result isn't tied to the first Suicide Squad either, with Gunn confirming that it's "its own thing." So forget about continuity for now.

Suicide Squad release date: When is it?

Warner Bros. has confirmed that The Suicide Squad is set   to release  in the UK on  30 July 2021 .

The film was originally scheduled for release in the UK on 6 August, but was pushed back by a week in May 2021.

The US release is still scheduled for August 6th, however, it   will also be available to stream on HBO Max as part of The WB's simultaneous release strategy for 2021 films, including  Godzilla vs. Kong  and  The Matrix 4 .

HBO Max is only available in the US, so the international release - although it hasn't been confirmed - will most likely only be in theaters.

Given that theaters open in the UK on May 17th, we look forward to a general release.

The Suicide Squad will bring back some of the characters from the original 2016 film, but will introduce several new members of the team — some of whom may not be keeping up for very long.

After becoming the breakout star of the original Suicide Squad and heading its own spin-off, there were rumors that Harley Quinn would be the focus of this soft reboot, although Robbie has denied such claims.

"One of the first things I said James was, I think Harley is a catalyst of chaos," Robbie told  Total Film  . "She's not necessarily the center of your narrative, and sometimes it's great when plot points can rest on the shoulders of other characters, and she can be the kind of thing that wrecks the whole sequence of events. Me Felt like that was something he agreed with, reading into the script based on who I was."

Gunn also praised Robbie, saying he "embodies character" while teasing a particularly elaborate action scene involving his character Harley Quinn.

Gunn told the  Associated Press  , "So I wrote the biggest action scene ever around Harley, and it was so much fun creating just about every level from working with stunt people to working with him  ." "It's probably my favorite four-minute film I've ever shot before. [Margot] can do anything."

"It's such a great actor that [James] put together," Kinnmn the  Hollywood Reporter  said  . "There's a lot of chops in that cast, and James has it all. He knows exactly what he wants, and sometimes it takes him 10 takes to get there, or it's going to take one. And he knows exactly when he gets what he needs because his ear is so attached to it."

Gunn also wrote a role specifically for Dave Bautista after the two collaborated on Guardians of the Galaxy, but the WWE star eventually chose Netflix's  Army of the Dead  when shooting dates conflicted.

"I had The Suicide Squad where I got to work with my guy again, even if it's a minor role, and then I had Army of the Dead, which would get me working with Jack Well, I get to tie up with Netflix, I get the lead role in a great movie — and I get paid a lot more," he   told   Digital Spy .

"I had to call James, and I told him, 'It breaks my heart, because as a friend, I want to be with you, but professionally, it's a smart decision for me.'"

What are the new characters in Suicide Squad?

For the new addition, writer-director Gunn has delved into the DC Comics archives and pulled out some pretty quirky characters from relative obscurity — all of whom were revealed in a teaser video released in August.

Idris Elba (  Luther  ) is the most famous new recruit and while initially rumored to be taking on Will Smith's character Deadshot, the teaser trailer revealed that he will be playing Bloodsport – a man named Robert DuBois after learning his brother is out of the Vietnam War. According to the comics, went to fight in his place. 

Meanwhile, David Dustmalchian (  Ant-Man  ) returns to the DC world after a small role in 2008's The Dark Knight, this time playing the minor Batman rogue Abner Krill, aka the Polka-Dot Man. In Gun's birthday video he can be seen with colored dots on his face in his honor.

Fan favorite Nathan Fillion (Firefly), who previously collaborated with Gunn on Slyther and Super, is also included as TDK, in what appears to be a new creation of Gunn — or perhaps a codename for a surprise inclusion.

What age rating is Suicide Squad?

Joel Kinnaman has suggested that the film be rated R in the US, which would translate to 15 or 18 in the UK depending on the film's content and indicating a more adult take on superheroics.

"For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it's kind of heavily R-rated," he said.

"It was a real learning experience for me as well because I had never done comedy like this before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me that. And yes, we had a lot of fun doing it. That movie is going to be a monster. Honestly, even though I'm in it, I can't wait to see it as a fan."

As anticipated, The Suicide Squad was actually rated R by the MPAA in the US for "strong violence and gore, language across, some sexual references, drug use". The MPAA also surprisingly noted that the film contained "brief graphic nudity", although there is speculation that it may refer to a visual gag involving the CGI character King Shark.

Given that 2016's Suicide Squad was rated PG-13 in the States, but still slapped with 15 here in the UK, this pretty much confirms that Suicide Squad has to be at least 15 years old. rating will be received.
